When training employees, you want to know whether participants truly understand the material. Sometimes a simple certificate of completion is enough, but in other cases you need to administer an actual test. So which systems can you use for digital testing? Eluxis looked into this for you.
Authoring tools
Examples: Articulate Storyline, Lectora Publisher, EasyGenerator
An authoring tool is software that allows you to create e‑learning modules and test the knowledge acquired in them. You can integrate the test into the e‑learning itself or administer it separately.
These tools typically offer various template designs so that your e‑learning module immediately looks polished. Authoring tools are ideal if you want to create a test today and deliver it tomorrow.
Testing systems
Examples: NetDimensions Exams, TestVision
A testing system is specifically designed for building and administering assessments. In a testing system, you build a question bank that serves as the foundation for your test. A question bank contains a large set of questions (at least 5× the number needed for one test). Each question is tagged with metadata, such as: difficulty level, subcategory, learning objective.
The instructor specifies how many questions of each type should appear in the test. The testing system then randomizes the question bank and selects test questions based on those characteristics. This means each participant receives a different version of the test, and retakes can be generated from the same question bank.
Building a question bank is time‑consuming, but instructors no longer need to create multiple new tests each year — saving time in the long run.
