Diving In or Taking It Step by Step? Lessons Learned from the Woodburning Workshop

Sometimes it seems like coincidence, but in reality it is mostly about recognition. Just as in my earlier blog about the windsurfing activity and the difference between throwing people in at the deep end or guiding them step by step, I noticed once again during last year’s autumn activity how universal this principle truly is.

During the autumn activity, we did something completely different with colleagues than creating manuals, training courses or user instructions. Instead, we went woodburning! A surprisingly creative workshop is perfect for the autumn season and just as educational as it was enjoyable.

Clear preparation creates peace of mind

The lead‑up to the workshop was well organised. In advance, we were encouraged to think about what we wanted to burn onto our wooden object. A quote, a drawing or a symbol, everything was possible. For those who prefer to start well prepared, this provided plenty of room to bring along sketches and ideas. At Eluxis, we recognise this principle all too well: good preparation and clear communication help participants get started with confidence.

Clear instructions: the difference between struggling and flow

During the workshop, it became clear how well the workshop leader guided the process. There was room to ask personal questions, and valuable tips were shared regularly. Thanks to the use of a microphone, the explanation was easy for everyone to hear. Once again, it showed that audio is an often underestimated part of the overall workshop experience.

With or without a plan: everyone can get started

As with any group, some colleagues arrived with well‑developed ideas, while others had no clear idea yet of what they wanted to create. Fortunately, the workshop leader anticipated this perfectly by bringing along a wide range of example designs. No one was left to their own devices. Everyone was given an entry point that suited them.

What this workshop teaches about good instructional design

  • be well prepared,

  • communicate clearly,

  • offer step-by-step guidance,

  • provide alternatives for people without prior knowledge as well as for more advanced participants,

  • create a safe and approachable learning environment.

These are exactly the elements at the heart of what Eluxis does. Whether we are writing a manual, designing a training programme or developing a digital learning experience, we make sure people are not thrown in at the deep end. Instead, they are guided where needed so they can get started with confidence.

Does your organisation also need well-designed instructions or a smoothly running training programme? Feel free to get in touch with us.
