The future of AI in Learning & Development

Dear customers and partners of Eluxis,
First, let me introduce myself. My name is Floor Stefess, and this time I have written the knowledge update. I have been working at Eluxis for almost 1.5 years now, focusing mainly on the development of knowledge systems, technical documentation, and e-learning solutions for various clients in the technical sector. In addition, I am active as a Key User for Copilot at Demcon, the AI tool we use. Today, I will take you along in the developments in the field of AI within the Learning & Development domain.

We are living in a time where personalization is no longer a preference, but the standard. Every day, we interact with smart algorithms that continuously provide us with information tailored exactly to our needs. How great would it be if this level of personalization could also be applied to learning and training?

Lessons from the Articulate User Day

This may sound like an ideal scenario that is still decades away. However, nothing could be further from the truth, as became clear during the most recent Articulate User Day. Eluxis participates in this event every year, and this year we were once again present with a team of two. During the event, Ronny Lohuis delivered an inspiring presentation on the future of AI in Learning & Development. He demonstrated that personalized learning is no longer a utopia, but a vision that can become reality in the near future.

  • AI as a creator: Using AI to create primary and supporting materials for various learning formats, such as text or images.

  • AI as an L&D assistant: Leveraging AI to support or speed up background tasks, such as generating overviews of registrations, progress, or employee results within a learning program.

  • AI-supported learning: Personalized knowledge transfer from, for example, a knowledge base to an employee, or AI tutoring—enabling direct interaction between the learner and AI.

A series of studies titled “AI in L&D”, by authors Donald H. Taylor (Honorary Doctorate in Workplace Learning and Development) and Eglė Vinauskaitė (co-founder of the AI Learning Collective), shows that these applications are currently being used to varying degrees.

As expected, the use of AI as a creator was the most widely adopted application within learning and training. Over the past year, the use of AI as an L&D assistant has also increased. By (partially) taking over repetitive or time‑consuming tasks, both applications can lead to increased efficiency in the development and maintenance of training programs.

What stands out is the emerging growth of AI‑supported learning. Unlike the other two applications, this approach directly improves the user experience of knowledge transfer within a learning program. By giving end users the option to choose a learning format that suits them best, engagement with and interest in the content increases. For example, employees may choose to learn via a podcast, video, or story. Lohuis illustrated this effectively by adding a third line to the figure above: the impact of AI applications.

What is the current status of AI in Learning & Development?

Unfortunately, the field has not yet advanced to the point where the above vision can be fully realized. However, we can already experiment with this form of personalized information. For example, Google’s software NotebookLM allows users to upload their preferred knowledge documentation and then presents it in summarized form across different media formats, such as videos, mind maps, or flashcards. Step by step, we are moving closer to a world in which personalization in learning is no longer an unattainable dream.

At the same time, we see that the importance of a high-quality knowledge base is becoming increasingly critical. Misinformation, hallucinations, and unclassified information are among the greatest risks when using AI for these purposes. Therefore, it is essential that knowledge and information are not only stored in a single location but are also well-structured and searchable by AI. This ensures that AI-driven personalized training programs contain the correct and reliable knowledge that your employees need.

What is Eluxis currently doing with AI, and what not?

It is exciting to see how training programs may become even better aligned with individual learning styles in the future. Until then, Eluxis is already taking on the challenge of using AI as effectively as possible. We closely follow developments such as Copilot (have you already tried the new Create tool?) and actively test the applicability of AI in our daily work.

At the same time, we continue to focus strongly on developing well-structured knowledge databases and learning pathways that best match the knowledge and training needs of our customers. With over 25 years of experience, we ensure that your organization’s internal knowledge is well prepared for the future of AI. Even today, we are able to create training programs that truly fit your employees.
