Organizations for which we develop knowledge solutions often use the same metaphor and refer to it as a house, a knowledge house. In such a knowledge house, you feel at home. You can easily find your way to the knowledge you are looking for, and it is a pleasant place to be.
What does a knowledge house consist of?
Just like a regular house, a knowledge house contains different rooms where different activities take place. A typical home has a living room, bedroom, hobby room, utility room, children’s room, and so on.
In the same way, a knowledge house has a room for procedures and instructions, one for technical drawings, one for R&D and innovation, and so forth. In each of these rooms, you will find different types of information, and different rules apply to the knowledge that is stored there. Some knowledge needs to be carefully regulated, while other knowledge may be open and flexible, allowing for experimentation and change.
Another defining characteristic of a house is that people come together and meet. These include the residents, but also neighbors, family, friends, and acquaintances. A knowledge house is therefore also a place for meeting and exchanging knowledge. Not only within the organization itself, but potentially also with people outside the organization, such as customers and partners.
